Green Porno is a series of very short films conceived, written, directed by and featuring Isabella Rossellini about the sex life of bugs, insects and various creatures. The films are a comical, but insightful study of the curious ways certain bugs “make love”.

Laut dessen Pressemitteilung ist der graphische Look der Filme extra an den sogenannten “third screen”, also Computerbildschirme, Handy-Displays und iPods angepasst, denn, so Rossellini, “they believe — as do a lot of other people — that the advent of the mobile phone, the iPhone and other small devices could provide new venues and new popularity for short films.” So entstand also folgendes Experiment:

Each film is executed in a very simple childlike manner. They are a playful mixture of real world and cartoon. Each episode begins with Isabella speaking to the camera “If I were a… (firefly, spider, dragonfly etc.)”. She then transforms into the male of the species explaining in a simple yet direct dialogue the actual act of species-specific fornication. The costumes, colorful sets and backdrops as well as the female insects (all simple paper cut-outs and sculptures) contribute to the playfulness of the films. The contrast of this “naïf” expression and filthy sex practices adds to the comicality of Green Porno. This child-like manner allows us to describe things that could possibly come across as offensive to some.

Motivation

One of the key features of modern computational systems is their ability to generate random numbers. Mathematicians and engineers have been and are still working out complex algorithms and hardware extensions to improve the entropy of random number generators (RNGs) by adding incalculable momentums to the deterministic chain of computer processing. On Linux systems, unpredictable hardware interrupts like HID events are fed to an entropy pool inside the kernel, which serves as the source of /dev/random and /dev/urandom. Quantum physicians have even manufactured PCI cards to allow the use of real physical randomness by analyzing radioactive decay or sending photons to a semi-transparent mirror and detecting the through-passing particles, as a further stage in this basic principle.

Especially in cryptography, indeterministic random numbers are needed to guarantee an adequate security. Predictable encryption keys undermine every attempt in creating a trustworthy environment inside the wide and rude spheres of the internet.

But still, there are circumstances in which it just doesn’t matter. Imagine the following situation: You are sitting in front of your computer and just can’t decide which MP3 to listen to. You want to listen to music, that’s all. You turn on “random” mode and press play. Seriously, you don’t give a f**k whether the song playing was chosen by the latest non-deterministic RNG algorithm or by the preference of some lazy programmer. This is the point, where hrng steps in.

Idea

The main principle of the Humanoid Random Number Generator (hrng) is the absence of randomness. Masses of human beings cannot act randomly, with “randomly” meaning “unpredictably”: they tend to imitate and do whatever The Others do. The imitation of third-party behaviour is unreasonable and with reason being the fundamental part of every scientific research that aims at being reproducible, absence of reason leads to irreproducible and therefore random results. Oh, wait a second. We just found out that unreasonable behaviour actually IS random. So is imitation.

If imitation is random, one can simply take the behaviour of another human being and imitate it to generate a random event. To you, I am one of these other humans, and I advise you to take 255 as your preferred random number.

Concept

The Humanoid Random Number Generator always returns 255.

Installation and Usage

Before using hrng, you have to unzip and compile it.

$ tar xzvf hrng-1.0.tar.gz
$ cd hrng-1.0/
$ make hrng

If you want to, you can copy the binary in a folder inside your $PATH (e.g. /usr/local/bin/).

# cp hrng /usr/local/bin/

That’s it! You can now enjoy the possibilites of the Humanoid Random Number Generator by running

hrng [-h] [N]

    -h    Prints the usage information
     N    Specifies the amount of random numbers to generate
          (default: infinite)

Der Kleinanzeigenschluss für diese Ausgabe war übrigens am Donnerstag.

Besondere Aufmerksamkeit bekam Abel unter anderem für seine 1959 ins Leben gerufene, satirische Society for Indecency to Naked Animals, die sich dafür einsetzte, “nackte Tiere” (sowohl Haustiere, als auch in der Wildnis lebende Tiere) aus der Öffentlichkeit zu verbannen und ihnen eine Kleidungspflicht aufzuerlegen, denn, so einer der Slogans, “a nude horse is a rude horse.” Selbst nachdem bekannt wurde, dass die ganze Bewegung aufgesetzt war, bekannten sich noch immer Sympathisanten zu den offensichtlich nicht ernst gemeinten Idealen und versuchten, gegen Hundebesitzer vorzugehen, die ihre unbekleideten Hunde ausführten.

Die Dokumentation, für die sich niemand anderes als Alan Abels Tochter Jenny Abel verantwortlich zeichnet, steht nun zur Auswahl für das Filmfestival From Here To Awesome. Dieses Festival erprobt neue Möglichkeiten zur Entdeckung, Promotion und Verbreitung von Independant-Filmen: Jeder Filmemacher kann seine Produktion ohne Gebühren im Internet anmelden; das (Internet-) Publikum entscheidet anschließend mit Hilfe der bekannten Web-2.0-Plattformen YouTube und MySpace, welche Filme in das Festivalprogramm aufgenommen und so einer breiten Öffentlichkeit präsentiert werden sollen. Diese enge Verzahnung von Publikum und Produzent über freie, im Internet verfügbare Mittel funktioniert nur aufgrund der aktuellen Trends des Social Networking, die offenbar immer mehr den Weg auch in konservativere Medienformen finden.

Vielleicht bringt uns diese Verzahnung, wenn sie sich irgendwann einmal auch im Fernsehen durchgesetzt hat, endlich die Erlösung von enervierenden TV-Formaten, die angeblich ja von niemandem geguckt werden, aber doch enorme Einschaltquoten erreichen (ob dabei die Sendungen tatsächlich angesehen werden, oder nur gemutet nebenbei laufen, während der “Zuschauer” gerade Kant liest, lässt sich natürlich nicht feststellen). Vielleicht bringt es uns aber auch gerade mehr von dem Scheiß. Vielleicht steckt aber auch Abel selbst hinter dem Ganzen, mit einem höheren Masterplan im Kopf, und lacht sich ins Fäustchen.
